For your information, here is information about learning that school staff will be participating in on the upcoming PA Day September 27, 2024. As usual, students do not attend school on PA Days. This information is also available on our Board website.

All Elementary Schools

Length: Half Day - AM 

Topic 1: Student Well-being, School Safety, and Violence Prevention

Entity Hosting: All Elementary Schools

Presenter(s)/Facilitator(s): Online modules developed by Board staff. Facilitated by School Administration.

Description:

School teams will engage in compliance training including: 

  • occupational health & safety;
  • student safety and violent incident prevention; 
  • training on supporting student mental health and well-being; and
  • understanding cybersecurity and online privacy. 

Length: Half Day - PM 

Topic 2: Achievement of Learning Outcomes

Entity Hosting: All Elementary Schools

Presenter(s)/Facilitator(s): Online modules developed by Board staff, self-directed and/or group-directed in grade/division groupings.

Description:

Literacy: Kindergarten to Grade 8 educators will participate in self-directed learning connected to literacy.  Topics will be differentiated by grade including the YRDSB Comprehensive Literacy Framework, Early Reading screening, and access to a variety of literacy resources to support effective instruction and assessment.

Math: Kindergarten to Grade 8 educators will participate in self-directed learning connected to Math. Topics include assessing a new digital tool available to all Grade 1-8 teachers, as well as high-impact instructional strategies for teaching math.

November 3, 2023   Parents’ Night is on Thursday November 16, 2023 and during the day of Friday November 17, 2023. You will have an opportunity to meet with your child(ren)’s teacher(s) in person, and learn more about the classroom. Edsby is the online tool supported for scheduling elementary interviews/conferences. Families will receive an invitation to sign up for a meeting time once the schedules are available on Monday November 6 at 4 pm .  Edsby is a cloud-based platform that lets families easily reserve times to meet with your child(ren)’s teachers. Welcome Back, Weather and Recess at LJPS

Happy New Year and welcome back to everyone in the LJPS community! Now that we're into our second week of 2024 we want to remind everyone that winter is in full swing. Temperatures have dropped significantly and that means we all have to come to school prepared for the cold. Please send your child (ren) to school with the appropriate hat, mitts/gloves, boots, scarf, jacket and snow pants. We will be going outside for 30 minutes every morning recess and for 40 minutes for every lunch recess. There are a few exceptions such as, if the temperature is less than -20 degrees Celsius, if it's raining, or the yard is far too icy to safely play on. Canadian winter is sometimes unpredictable and we see temperature swings that include many degrees above and below Celsius from one week to the next. Welcome Everyone

Welcome back to everyone in our Lorna Jackson P.S. community! Mr. Brown, Principal and Mrs. Herdman, Vice Principal would like to extend a warm welcome to all our returning and new staff that have joined us this 2023-2024 school year.  We also want to share that our educator teams have worked diligently to prepare for students' return to school so that 2023-2024 will be another great year!  We would like to share a few helpful tips for starting the school day off on the right foot. Please make sure to set up predictable routines such as, an early bedtime, eating breakfast and packing student backpacks the night before, so that you are able to get to school on time.  As we move towards fall and cooler weather it is still important for families to be prudent in completing daily  self-screening   to further prevent the spread of illness and COVID.
