Reminder of the Importance of Measles Vaccine and Records May 23, 2025

According to the latest report published by Public Health Ontario (PHO), the number of measles cases

in Ontario continue to increase. As of May 20, there has been a total of 1,834 measles cases reported

in 2025 associated with the ongoing outbreak. York Region has reported three cases so far in 2025, but

with increased local and international travel ahead, more are anticipated.

York Region Public Health echoes the Ontario Chief Medical Officer of Health in reminding our local

school boards on the importance of staff and students being up to date with measles vaccination

and ensuring staff are prepared to provide immunization records (or other documentation of

immunity) in a timely manner to prevent disruptions to school operations in the event of measles

cases. Please see the attached memo from Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health sent to school

boards across the province on May 13, 2025.

To support these efforts, York Region continues to offer vaccine clinics by appointment for school-aged

children at York.ca/Immunizations. In addition, our Community Summer Vaccine Clinics in July and

August (2025) are being expanded to anyone who does not have a primary health care provider (family

doctor) and requires a measles vaccine (ages 12 month to 55 years). Other routine childhood

immunizations will also be available for children ages 12 months to 17 years. More details to come.
