Welcome Back, Weather and Recess at LJPS

Happy New Year and welcome back to everyone in the LJPS community! Now that we're into our second week of 2024 we want to remind everyone that winter is in full swing. Temperatures have dropped significantly and that means we all have to come to school prepared for the cold. Please send your child (ren) to school with the appropriate hat, mitts/gloves, boots, scarf, jacket and snow pants. We will be going outside for 30 minutes every morning recess and for 40 minutes for every lunch recess. There are a few exceptions such as, if the temperature is less than -20 degrees Celsius, if it's raining, or the yard is far too icy to safely play on.

Canadian winter is sometimes unpredictable and we see temperature swings that include many degrees above and below Celsius from one week to the next. The more prepared we are the more fun students will have being outside, getting exercise and engaging in burning off extra energy daily.

At LJPS when the pavement is icy we typically have morning entry (8:30-8:45 am) where the students come inside for the first 15 minutes of the day prior to instruction time beginning. At morning and lunch recess, we have tried something new this year at LJPS. For the past 2 days we have had grass only recess where all students play on the snow covered grass. This is has been covered in snow which gives us traction to walk and play on when the paved area of our yard to too icy to be on. Of course there is no soccer allowed to further ensure the safety of every student, staff and lunch supervisor on the yard.
